The plot / player background

Even historians have forgotten that the principality of Morvania was not always the paranoid and insular nation that it is now better known as. Many generations ago, during the golden reign of Crown Prince Ludwig III, the noble houses formed private militias and marched them far across the known world. Wherever they found economic or strategic advantage they carved colonies from the wilderness, owing nominal fealty to the crown but holding true allegiance to their patrons. Ludwig’s death led to the accession of Hans the Bastard who, determined to secure his position, unleashed what were to become known as the years of terror. As the nobles that threatened him met their premature and gruesome deaths the dependencies that they had established passed one by one into the hands of the tyrant. With his need to control his own populace the national army could not be spared to enforce his rule in his spreading empire and he established a legion of soldiers drawn from the tribes and nations that lay far from his own borders. This Foreign Legion of Morvania, known more widely as ‘The Nomads’, were drawn to service with the promise of citizenship and land and for many years maintained the rule of Morvania throughout the colonies, their fearsome reputation well earned with deeds of renown and horror.

Alas for Morvania, all such glorious periods must pass and as the continued political machinations within the homeland caused it to collapse inwards upon itself the Nomads were recalled and the colonies were each lost in turn until now, many years later but one remains, the Highlands of Dunkelmoore in the south eastern corner of Aurea. This pitiful remnant of the empire provides little of worth and is long forgotten about by most.

Morvania is once more a turbulent place, with many jockeying for the throne vacated by the recently murdered Crown Prince Otto. Only a few have become aware that there has been no word from Dunkelmoore for some months but one of these is a young Captain in the National Army. Jonas von Altberg comes from a family that has renounced all claim on the crown and fuelled by nationalistic fervour has petitioned for an expeditionary force to discover what has occurred in the lost outpost. With the army tied up on pressing matters of violence at home he has been granted permission to reconstitute the Foreign Legion and has put out a call to arms.
