15 Mar 2013 - 21:00 - 17 Mar 2013 - 02:00
All the world knows of the famous Libraries at Musee, literary capital of the world, seat of learning, focus of worship for the followers of Gideon, Realm Lord of Knowledge, and a site so secure that the disciples of Scathlock have declared a competition amongst their number with a
prize for the first to effect a theft from the restricted reading area in these august halls. Far fewer are aware of the Monastery of Gideon at Viden, resting in a peaceful vale near the edge of the Vorrin Forest, not too far from the Village of Oakham. Over the centuries, while the Libraries have drawn the scholars of the Known Lands to their hallowed halls, the Monastery has quietly been the centre of research for the Gideon faith. It is here that all new finds by the members of the faith are brought, to be catalogued, investigated, researched, and their history and provenance probed and proved. Only once the most thorough work has been carried out, are texts, books, tablets, scrolls and other items passed on to the scholars at Musee.
The Monastery is set in a quiet backwater, and visited only by those who already know of its existence or have been contracted to work for the Brothers and Sisters, but nonetheless an excellent waystation is maintained for the benefit of travellers and visitors, and its hospitality is legendary amongst the adherents of the Gideon faith.
It is therefore something of a surprise to the general populace when a proclamation is made in marketplaces and taverns throughout the world, inviting adventurers to visit the Monastery to take on a quest to find an item that has been stolen from the order.
It is read thus:
“The scholars of the House of Gideon at Viden wish to make it known that they will pay to any man, woman, or sentient creature of any race, the sum of 6 marks per day for their service in the endeavour to find the Cantos Tablet, a stone engraved with ancient writing that has no monetary or magical value but is of great scholarly interest and curiosity to scholars of the ancient world. Whoever returns the Tablet to the Monastery at Viden, whether an individual or group, will in addition be paid a reward of 15 crowns. Willing parties will present themselves to Abbott Evans at the House of Gideon in Viden no later than 1 moon hence.”
