Born of Hope

Welcome to the Stock Wood

Stock Wood is a fantastic 14 acre site dedicated to LRP. It is located just on the edge of the beautiful Forest of Dean. The site uniquely offers: an Iron Age village with three roundhouses, a large medieval style tavern, player & crew quarters, camping areas surrounded by an expanse of spectacular woodland that contains mini valleys, small caves and numerous constructions (from gate house to tomb) to adventure in. Legion of Dreams runs its own fantasy events monthly, but the Stock Wood site is available for use by all other insured LRP groups.

The Iron Age Village

The Iron Age style encampment consists of three genuine roundhouses, two large roundhouses containing fire places, and one smaller roundhouse containing a stove, all set within set within a palisade enclosure. The large roundhouses can each comfortably sleep 20 or so people, the smaller one up to a dozen, although you do need to bring your own camp beds or order hay bales to sleep on. The encampment boasts several wicker-framed stalls, so vendors need not worry about the time and difficulty of bringing their own infrastructure to set up their own stalls. There is also a wicker-frame outdoor BBQ & bar stall, communal fire pit, perfect for steaks and roast lamb, one-pot cooking, and any kind of evening revelry!

The Reception Tavern

The reception hut has recently been refurbished to provide comfortable player accommodation in the style of a medieval Tavern. It consists of a tavern/banquet, bar and kitchen area. To the rear there is one bunk room with 12 beds and one camp bed room with 8 beds. The kitchen has running cold water and a new four ring gas cooker. The entire reception hut is lit at night by a solar/wind powered 12 volt system, this also enables the charging of walky-talkies, mobile phones, torches etc.

The Crew Camp

Looking after your crew is important. The crew camp consists of a static caravan, with adjoining 10m x 5 m felt roofed lean-too with benches & rails to provide plenty of room to layout the largest of crew kits and keep things dry and accessible. To one side there is also a covered fire pit area.

The Woodland and Scowles

Outside the village palisade enclosure is the scowles strewn woodland. Scowles are ancient iron-workings that now form shallow valleys. It is said that J.R.R. Tolkien visited these scowles shortly before writing the Moria section of Lord of the Rings. This ancient landscape form a perfect setting for live role-playing encounters, and is pre-populated with many encounter areas such as the graveyard, the gatehouse, tombs as well as many other hovels and mini caves. A large area of coppice woodland also extends beyond to the west.

Other amenities include

  • Environmentally-friendly compost toilets
  • Camping area
  • Free parking

New for 2009

We are continually further developing and improving the site for LRP. We have recently completed the installation of a network of lights in the woodland and it is now possible to floodlight large sections of the woodland to very atmospheric night time encounters by use of a generator. We now also purchased a mobile shower block, which should soon be connected to provide hot showers by the end of the year.

Comments about the site

“I was at your site for the Three Kingdoms event a couple of weekends ago, and I have to say, it was absolutely amazing... I've been to many many sites, and run many events, with many different systems, and your site was in a totally different league...”
